The new USI Room Management System

This engineering project report presents the redesign of the room reservation experience at Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), replacing the legacy Gestione Aule application and reducing the operational friction of Planon, a software for building management. The project delivers a USI Inside application integrating Planon’s REST API. The new system improves usability, makes recurring reservations reliable, and enforces role-based access through institutional services. The work covers requirements analysis, system architecture, integration with multiple microservices, and the implementation of a custom scheduling UI tailored to university classrooms. The result is a modern, responsive interface that aligns with existing institutional data sources (courses, people, management units) while keeping Planon as the source of truth for reservations. The project also highlights the challenges of integrating a facilities management platform into a focused academic use case and proposes steps toward production readiness.
