USI Hackathon 2019: Making Data Alive

Event: USI Hackathon 2019, organized by CodeLounge (Software Institute, USI)

Date: 15 November 2019 – 17 November 2019

Role: Co-organizer and photographer

Audience: Developers, data enthusiasts, and students of all backgrounds, plus kids and families for the mini-hackathon

A three-day hackathon held from 15 to 17 November 2019 in the Aula Magna of the USI↗ campus in Lugano, organized by CodeLounge↗, the research and development group of the Software Institute↗, with the support of Ated4Kids↗ and Lugano Living Lab↗. I was part of the organizing team, led by Marco D’Ambros and Michele Lanza together with Mauro Prevostini and Elisa Larghi from the Faculty of Informatics, and with my CodeLounge colleagues Luca Ponzanelli, Davide Paolo Tua, Jesper Findahl, and Roberto Minelli. I also took the pictures of the event, collected in the Flickr album↗. All the details are on the event website↗.

The hackathon

Under the theme Making Data Alive, the hackathon was built around open data about the city of Lugano, with a focus on mobility: datasets on traffic flows, parking, public transport, and demographics made available by the city and by the sponsors. Teams of two to six people competed in two tracks: a coding track, where they built working prototypes on top of the data, and a data analysis track, where they looked for insights hidden in it. A jury of researchers and practitioners from academia and industry evaluated the projects and awarded cash prizes in both tracks, plus a USI Master scholarship.

On the Saturday, a mini-hackathon ran in parallel for kids and families, bringing the same spirit of the event to a younger audience.
